WipeOut 2097 The Sound Track - Virgin Records - 1996

It can be easy to over look game sound tracks, especially if you’re not that into gaming but the WipeOut sound track is better than a lot of regular compilation albums (experience talking!). The artist list speaks for itself and many of the tracks aren’t the usual radio edits so there’s some special stuff on here. All the tracks share the same theme of dirty electro with heavy bass, but vary nicely across the genres of fast paced techno into slower breakbeat examples. From Underworld’s relentless  ‘Tin There’ to Daft Punk’s laid back ‘Musique’ this disc is a perfect example of how great electronica can be when it’s done right.

This has got me looking into other game sound tracks that I might have over looked myself, including the other WipeOut comps’ bet there are a few that are worth a shot.

I hadn’t heard this disc for probably over ten years but I’m glad I rediscovered it, THE track for me is Orbital’s ‘P.E.T.R.O.L.’ it has this tense paranoia about it, hard to convey with words but it seems to me at least to be the most fitting track for the game.
